This involved some backtracking, past Moab. I went past my old campground on the Colorado River, where there was construction that reduced traffic to a single lane. While sitting in traffic, I realized: I knew the area looked familiar! I didn&#8217;t know a whole lot about it &#8211; but it was right off the highway. I stopped for a hike, doing a loop through the monument.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_539\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/0920valley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-539\" src=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/0920valley.jpg\" alt=\"Monument Canyon\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" class=\"size-full wp-image-539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/0920valley.jpg 600w, https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/0920valley-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monument Canyon<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This monument is mostly known for its large central canyon, &#8216;Monument Canyon&#8217; which is mostly red rock and scrub &#8211; although there&#8217;s also striking rock pillars (I don&#8217;t know if they&#8217;re technically considered hoodoos). The valley opens up above Fruita, Colorado, a town in a sort of desert oasis &#8211; after this city, the landscape started to change more dramatically into the Rocky Mountains. However, the experience was marred by the dirt bike tracks visible in many places. The sand in these parks is delicate and composed of a lot of micro-organisms. It&#8217;s a living thing, in a way, and the dirt bike tracks last a very long time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_538\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/0920sheep.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-538\" src=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/0920sheep.jpg\" alt=\"Bighorn Sheep\" width=\"450\" height=\"221\" class=\"size-full wp-image-538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/0920sheep.jpg 450w, https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/0920sheep-300x147.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bighorn Sheep<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nonetheless, I was excited to see another animal that I hadn&#8217;t gotten much of a look at on my trip: bighorn sheep.
