It made the place look like a fairytale town, besides which Bruges is reputed to be the best-preserved medieval city in Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>Did it live up to the hype? For me, not really.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1021view.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1021view.jpg\" alt=\"1021view\" width=\"400\" height=\"530\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1021view.jpg 400w, https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1021view-226x300.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it&#8217;s a charming place, but it feels a bit like a Disneyland for grown-ups &#8211; like a more sophisticated amusement park, where the curtains and the tunnels are a bit less obvious.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no grand conspiracy, but this is a city whose entire economy consists of lace shops, kitschy tourist places, fancy chocolate stores, and restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>When I reached Bruges, I had been traveling for over three months, first <a href=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/?page_id=528\">around the US in a van<\/a>, and then through Belgium. I was a bit tired of all this movement, never staying in the same place for more than three or four days. And as a fabricated, Disneyland kind of romantic place, there wasn&#8217;t a lot for one person to do in the town.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_734\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020beer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-734\" src=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020beer.jpg\" alt=\"De Halve Maan\" width=\"300\" height=\"417\" class=\"size-full wp-image-734\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020beer.jpg 300w, https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020beer-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-734\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">De Halve Maan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I did take a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halvemaan.be\/\">brewery tour<\/a>, with a genuinely funny France-hating tour guide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020brewery.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020brewery.jpg\" alt=\"1020brewery\" width=\"300\" height=\"473\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020brewery.jpg 300w, https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020brewery-190x300.jpg 190w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But even here&#8230; the main brewery operations had long since been moved outside of town, so what exactly were we touring?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_743\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1021windmill.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-743\" src=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1021windmill.jpg\" alt=\"Park at the edge of central Bruges\" width=\"450\" height=\"352\" class=\"size-full wp-image-743\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1021windmill.jpg 450w, https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1021windmill-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Park at the edge of central Bruges<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I really enjoyed two things in town: first, going to the very edge of the tourist zone, which was encompassed by a ring of canals with parks and windmills, an area I found peaceful, with few tourists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020walk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020walk.jpg\" alt=\"1020walk\" width=\"400\" height=\"593\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-744\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020walk.jpg 400w, https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020walk-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The parks were extensive, with ponds, swans and little castles. Not to mention a few alcoves and recognizable sights from the movie.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020nightstreet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020nightstreet.jpg\" alt=\"1020nightstreet\" width=\"400\" height=\"613\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-737\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020nightstreet.jpg 400w, https:\/\/roadtrip.robertlitzke.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1020nightstreet-196x300.jpg 196w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also loved the city after dark. The crowds started to disappear, at least outside of the main restaurants, and most of the buildings are lit by tasteful floodlights. It&#8217;s quiet, and there was a slight drizzle. But it started to silt up, and trade moved to Antwerp and other cities, leaving the city as a backwater. From Bruges, I traveled back to NYC, via Brussels, to return to work.
